Designing with the complex dramas in child welfare

How can theater be used in the design of public services? Throughout the autumn, eight students on the Bachelor in Acting at Kristiania and graduating students on the Bachelor in Screenwriting at Kristiania, and Master's students in system-oriented design at AHO. have worked closely with people who have experience as children, parents, foster parents and staff in child welfare. Together, the students and partners have explored how theater can be used to create new perspectives and conversations about what child protection is, and can be. This performance is the result of this work.

In the performance, the audience is invited into a complex system, and how this feels on the body for those who are in it. The play asks open questions about how we as a society view children, families, care and expertise, and about how this shapes how we look after our children.

Who is responsible for a child’s wellbeing?

What should a child decide for themselves?

What makes a good family?

Who knows what a child needs?

What’s the cost of caring for others?

And how does this affect the way you think we should do child welfare?Photo: Kristiania/Jonatan Quintero Photo: Kristiania/Jonatan Quintero
