GRASS

Fall 2021
Material research into grass. Grass, and in particular lawns, are extremely important to humans because of communal rituals, sports and symbolization of pride of homeownership. Therefore it is the most irrigated plant, but also leads to the use of pounds of pesticides (which leach into water supplies), a questionable use of space and most importantly: dissonance in our relationship with nature.

The hat and dress are a reference to the wealth and playfulness of lawns. Yet over time, this is not sustainable - the hat and dress fade away when in nature due to the sun and rain.

Techniques like cooking, weaving, pressing, dying were used during the research. The result was a material in between paper, cardboard and plastic in the form of a hat.
